Fantasy Football Injuries: Hold or Drop in Draft Leagues?

In a fantasy football draft league, do not drop a flagged star simply because his status changed. Wait when the player still has a realistic chance of the next match and the deadline is several days away. Consider a drop only when the likely missed starts, the strength of your bench and a specific free agent's value together outweigh the injured player's rest-of-season value.
That calculation is different from classic FPL. Every player has one owner, so dropping a premium asset in a Draft Fantasy Premier League competition gives every rival a chance to claim him. There is no buy-back guarantee.
The timing makes that distinction urgent. Official data marks Gameweek 5 finished and data checked, while Gameweek 6 is next with a 10:00 UTC deadline on 10 October 2026. All ten Gameweek 6 fixtures were still unstarted on 29 September. The Premier League's 28 September injury update also identified several highly owned players as doubts, but there are still 11 days for club news to change the decision.
The injury board: what to do today
The recommendations below use Draft Fantasy regular scoring, which matches official FPL scoring. Custom-scoring leagues can change the value of defensive work, goals and other actions, so apply your commissioner's settings before copying the order.

Official FPL availability and Draft Fantasy completed-private-league roster rates, 29 September 2026.
“Hold” means take no irreversible action today, not assume the player will start. “Check the market” means compare a real available replacement before the deadline; it is not a universal drop instruction. Roster rate shows how scarce a player is across completed private Draft Fantasy leagues, but popularity alone does not prove future value.
Why Isak, Palmer, Semenyo and Gakpo are holds
Alexander Isak, Cole Palmer, Antoine Semenyo and Cody Gakpo had combined for 19 starts and 126 regular-scoring points through Gameweek 5. All four carried an official 75 per cent chance of playing in the 29 September snapshot.
That is a reason to wait, not a promise that all four will be fit. Their established roles and high roster rates make the downside of an early drop much larger than the downside of using a substitute for one round. Even Gakpo, the least widely rostered of the four at 67.6 per cent, had started four matches and scored 32 points.
If you cannot field a full XI, solve the short-term problem from the bottom of your squad first. Do not turn a temporary doubt into a season-long gift for a rival.
Mateta is a bench decision, not an automatic drop
Jean-Philippe Mateta is a harder case. The official feed listed an expected return of 11 October, one day after the Gameweek 6 deadline. He had played only 62 minutes and scored two points, but remained rostered in 60.4 per cent of completed private leagues.
The date is an estimate, not a confirmed return or absence. If a later club update rules him out for one match but leaves a near-term return likely, a playable bench can justify another hold. If the absence extends and a starting forward is genuinely free, the replacement becomes more valuable because forward depth is harder to rebuild after a drop.
Use the same test for every medium-term injury: how many starts are you likely to lose, and what exact starter can you add? “Someone healthy” is not a replacement plan.
Unknown return dates make the free-agent pool decisive
Justin Kluivert, Anthony Elanga and Amar Dedić all had unknown return dates in the official snapshot. Their roster rates were much lower than the premium holds, so the opportunity cost of waiting changes.
Kluivert had four starts in 294 minutes; Elanga had three in 232; Dedić had four in 327. Those roles have value, but they do not override a healthy, secure starter who is available now. In a shallow league, an unknown timeline can make that roster place expendable. In a deep league with no reliable starter free, holding may still be the better choice.
Before making the switch, use the waiver and free-agent rules guide to check whether your target can be added immediately or must clear waivers. A good replacement who cannot join before the next lineup deadline does not solve the current problem.
A five-step hold-or-drop test
- Read the status, then the clock. A 75 per cent flag 11 days before a deadline carries less urgency than the same flag after the final press conference.
- Count playable cover. If your bench can protect one missed match, preserving the better season-long asset is usually easier.
- Name the replacement. Compare starts, role and scoring fit with a specific free agent—not with an imaginary ideal pickup.
- Price scarcity by position. A replaceable defender or fifth midfielder is easier to stream than a forward whom most leagues already roster.
- Make the irreversible move last. Queue a waiver if needed, but recheck official news before releasing a player your rivals would immediately claim.

Should you trade an injured player instead?
A trade can preserve more value than a drop, but injury uncertainty is a poor moment to sell a cornerstone at a large discount. If the other manager is pricing a short absence as a permanent loss, hold. If your bench cannot absorb the missed starts and the return brings back a secure starter at a scarce position, a deal can be rational.
Use the fantasy football trade strategy guide to compare role, schedule, scarcity and the best free replacement on both sides. The important question is not whether the injured player is famous; it is whether the whole deal improves the starting points you can actually field.
The Gameweek 6 plan
Today, hold the premium 75 per cent doubts and monitor the unknown timelines. Closer to 10 October, separate confirmed absences from cleared players, inspect the actual free-agent pool and protect a complete lineup. That sequence avoids both panic drops and passive bench clutter.
